St. Catharines Market Square getting taken over by charity pies

The pies are coming and this time, they’re supporting Niagara charities.

The St. Catharines Downtown Association and the Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre, in partnership with the city, are seeking savoury bakers to take over St. Catharines Farmers Market with a harvest pie festival this fall in support of local charities.

On October 5, from noon to 3 p.m., Market Square will go pie-crazy as folks bring into their pastry perfections.

“The City is happy to support this event and extends a warm invitation to all local bakers and small businesses to join as vendors,” said Deanna Chakarova, the City’s market coordinator.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some delicious creations and support local charities while connecting with the community.”

Family-sized pies, measuring a full nine inches, will be available for purchase at $25 each, while the smaller hand-held four-inch pies will be priced at $15.

For each pie sold, a donation of $5 will be made towards supporting a local charity of the baker or vendor’s choice.  While approved vendors will not be charged to participate, they will be required to commit the donation amount indicated.

To heighten the festive atmosphere, visitors will be treated to live entertainment from the local band, the O’Deadly’s, who will hit the market stage starting just before the festival begins at 11:30 a.m. adding some extra flavour to the experience.

To participate as a vendor at the Harvest Pie Festival, interested parties are required to have their pies made in an inspected kitchen and ensure they are listed as compliant with Public Health.
