Mississauga man charged with impaired driving

A Mississauga man is facing impaired driving and several other charges after police officers at a RIDE checkpoint in London were nearly struck by a speeding car early Sunday morning.

Middlesex County OPP said in a news release issued Tuesday the fast-moving car entered the checkpoint area on eastbound Highway 401 at Wellington Road “at a high rate of speed, nearly striking officers who were on foot.”

Police then quickly pulled over a vehicle, just before 1:30 a.m., and arrested a man.

The RIDE program is a year-round police initiative that seeks to keep impaired drivers off Ontario roads and highways. Efforts are stepped up several times a year, including during the holiday season in December and summer and fall long weekends.

A 22-year-old man from Mississauga is charged with:

  • operation while impaired — blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • dangerous operation
  • drive — handheld communication device
  • driver — fail to properly wear seatbelt
  • possess more than one licence
  • driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • drive vehicle with cannabis readily available

He was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 18 to answer to the charges.
