International Dog Day is a reminder of the many furry friends still looking for their forever home.

The City of Mississauga put out a post Monday, International Dog Day, remarking on some of the dogs currently waiting for homes.

International or National Dog Day falls on Aug. 26 every year. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the day dedicated to the contributions of canine companions, The Holiday Guild said in a press release.

Founded in 2004 by celebrity pet lifestyle expert, animal behaviourist, author and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, to give back to dogs as a “thank you” for all that they do in our lives.

“From police and service dogs, bomb and drug sniffing dogs and more, I felt so strongly that they needed recognition for the all the wondrous things they are and the amazing roles they play in our lives,” says Paige.

Local shelters and pet rescues have dogs for adoption. As of Tuesday, Mississauga Animal Services had seven dogs up for adoption.

“Some of the dogs at the Mississauga Animal Services Shelter have been there for over a year patiently waiting to find their forever home,” the City of Mississauga said in a post on X.

Animal Services didn’t immediately specify which dogs have been in the shelter for the longest but each dog is deserving of a home.

Those looking for a canine companion can check out Coco Chanel who is affectionate once she gets to know you, or Shar-pei mix Scooby who loves cuddles.

A husky-type dog, Pancetta is bursting with energy and personality. Amy is a goofball who loves to run and play.

Or there is Chance who was found tied to a tree at a local park with a muzzle on his face.

Those looking to adopt a dog need to make an appointment with Mississauga Animal Services at 905‑896‑5858 ext. 3.
