Heavy snowfall is expected throughout Thursday in Mississauga and surrounding areas, but Toronto Pearson Airport officials say they’re expecting only trace amounts and that current flight operations are not being impacted.

However, airport officials are urging travellers bound for the Boston area in the U.S. northeast to check the status of their flights ahead of time with the airline as weather south of the border is causing delays.

In addition, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration says winter weather might also cause flight delays into and out of New York City’s three major airports (LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Liberty) in addition to airports in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

But closer to home, things are on schedule for now, Pearson officials say.

“It’s a snowy start to the new year. Snowflakes are falling, but we’re only expecting trace amounts of snow accumulation today,” they said in a post to social media shortly before noon. “Currently, we aren’t seeing any impact to operations. Our surface maintenance specialists are out in their state-of-the-art equipment clearing the runways.”

Pearson officials note the airport is well-equipped with an army of snowplows and other snow-clearing machines to keep the planes taking off and landing safely should more snow fall throughout the day.

Despite the relatively small accumulation of snow so far Thursday at Pearson Airport in Mississauga, a winter weather travel advisory for Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Halton issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada is calling for heavy snowfall with total accumulations of five to 10 cm expected.

That means the snowfall situation at Pearson, and therefore flight schedules, could change later Thursday afternoon and into the evening. As always, officials urge travellers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
