Police in Barrie, Ontario, checking on a man they believed was in medical distress, found instead a man trying to hide a loaded pistol and a large amount of drugs.
According to Barrie Police, officers were on patrol just after 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 27 when they spotted two men walking away from a parked car.
Police asked the two what they were up to before sending them on their way.
Police then checked on the parked vehicle and found a man in the backseat. When the man didn’t respond, officers feared he was sick or injured.
“Access to the car was obtained and the male was found not to be in need of medical attention, but rather, he was attempting to evade police as he was found to be in possession of a large quantity of drugs as well as a fully loaded semi-automatic pistol,” police said.
The passenger was arrested and taken to Barrie Police Headquarters, where detectives from the Barrie Police Criminal Investigation Division continued the investigation.
Arrested is a 37-year-old Brampton man who now faces several firearms-related charges, as well as drug possession and drug trafficking charges in relation to the cocaine, ecstasy, Percocet and fentanyl that was found at the scene.
The motor vehicle that was initially observed has been seized pending the ongoing investigation and warrants of arrest are being sought for the two males who police initially investigated after the car had been parked.
Police have not released the name of the man arrested because of the ongoing investigation.
