Sheridan College is assuring international students at its campuses in Oakville, Mississauga and Brampton that they’ll be able to stay in school.

Via its official X (formerly Twitter) social media account, Sheridan addressed the recent temporary cap on international study permits announced by the federal government.

“We understand that for many people in our community, the government announcement may be causing uncertainty and anxiety,” said the post.

“We’re actively working to get more details, but we want to reassure our current students that you are not affected by these changes.”

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced it is implanting a temporary cap on the number of international students who are issued study visas.

For 2024, the cap is expected to result in approximately 360,000 approved study permits, a decrease of 35 per cent from 2023.

In addition, IRCC is introducing caps for each province and territory. The department said the caps will be weighted by population, and will result in significant decreases in provinces where the international student population has seen the most unsustainable growth.

“Sheridan will continue to champion responsible enrolment and an outstanding academic and student experience. As soon as we have more information, we will share it with our community.”

They advised anyone with specific questions about study permits or the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) to email [email protected].
