Arrest in UTM sex assault in Mississauga.

A Brampton man is facing sexual assault and other charges after a woman was attacked on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus this past Sunday afternoon.

Peel Regional Police told INsauga.com that a man turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday.

Police say a woman was assaulted “and then forced into a room” inside one of the buildings at about 2:30 p.m. Reports that the victim is a student at the Mississauga Road campus were not confirmed by police.

“The victim was able to escape and call for help,” Peel police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena told INsauga.com, adding investigators were able to identify a suspect with help from UTM campus police.

Police said earlier this week the woman suffered minor physical injuries.

Police didn’t say if the suspect is a student at UTM, or if he attends another U of T campus, nor did they say if he has any affiliation with the post-secondary institution.

However, Bell-Morena did say the two people were not known to one another.

Husnain Chaudhry, 31, of Brampton, is charged with assault, forcible confinement and sexual assault. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

A University of Toronto online alert posted to the school community earlier this week in the wake of the assault indicated the attack took place inside the Communication, Culture and Technology building at about 2:30 p.m.

UTM Campus Safety Team officials said in the alert that “an unknown male physically overtook and assaulted a female on the second floor” of the building before fleeing the area.

The Mississauga Road campus, located just north of Dundas Street West, is much less populated with students and faculty during the summer compared to fall, winter and spring terms.

The UTM Campus Safety Team said it issued the alert in order to “make the U of T community aware of a recent safety concern.”

It shared the alert “with our full community because many in our community travel from St. George or Scarborough to (the) Mississauga campus for classes, labs or other purposes.”

The alert continued: “We encourage all members of our community to exercise vigilance and to report any behaviour of concern to Campus Safety.”

Peel police said their investigation continues and anyone with information is urged to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3460, or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
