A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for late Wednesday afternoon (June 5) in Mississauga and Brampton as well as Oakville, Burlington and Milton.
Environment Canada says conditions are favourable all the way into the early evening in both Peel Region and Halton Region for the development of severe thunderstorms that could as well produce strong wind gusts, heavy rain and even large hail.
Wind gusts could reach up to 90 km/h with heavy downpours and hail that could be as big as a nickel.
A line of thunderstorms is currently impacting southwestern Ontario and Lake Huron,” said Environment Canada. “This line of thunderstorms is expected to push through the region later this afternoon into this evening.”
Environment Canada reminds residents to be prepared for severe weather and to make sure to take cover immediately.
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Being out on the water may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.
“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” said the national weather forecaster. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! If you hear thunder, then lightning is close enough to be dangerous.
“Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”
A severe thunderstorm watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
