Costco membership fee increase

No Costco membership? Then no getting into Costco stores in Mississauga, and across Canada and the United States.

The giant retailer is going extra lengths to ensure that membership has its rewards.

The membership-based warehouse retailer is installing membership scanning devices at the entrance door of all warehouses over the coming months.

Guests looking to come into the store must also now be accompanied by a valid member.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner,” Costco announced in a statement on its website.

The retailer also announced there will always be an attendant at the door to assist customers if they have any questions or concerns.

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop,” said the company.

Club members without a photo on their card will also now have to be prepared to show valid ID with a photo.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card,” said Costco.

The announcement by Costco comes after a pilot program run over the month of July at its stores.

The decision comes about a month after the American multinational corporation announced it was going to increase annual membership fees by $5 in the United States and Canada beginning September 1, 2024.

The annual fee will now cost $65.

Costco has 884 warehouses across the world, including 108 here in Canada.
