A scam circulating now targets Highway 407 ETR drivers in Ontario.
The fraudsters, pretending to represent the toll highway, send a text message claiming the recipient has an unpaid balance, according to a post on Reddit yesterday (Jan. 1).
“Scammers are getting smarter and more ruthless. Stay vigilant!!” the poster said.
This is actually a repeat of a scam that circulated in late 2022, and it appears to be making the rounds again.
Recently Highway 407 ETR warned people that scammers are sending a fake request for payment through text messages.
“Scam Alert! Fraudsters are sending scams by text message,” 407 ETR said on X in December. “Don’t click the link! 407 ETR only sends text messages for payment reminders which include a link to a secure webpage to make the payment.”
There were also reports of phishing attempts where a scammer tries to get personal information.
The text message prompts the recipient to respond to a billing notification.
