Impaired operation charges have been laid following a rollover collision where the driver allegedly fled the scene of the crash, police say.
The crash happened on Sunday around 9:30 p.m. with the OPP saying officers from the Caledon detachment were called to Old School Road near Kennedy Road.
When officers arrived they found a car had flipped onto its passenger side, coming to a stop on the side of the road according to a photo shared by investigators.
No injuries were reported but police say the driver failed to remain at the scene of the crash. The driver was later arrested and charged with multiple offences, police say.
The OPP says a 31-year-old male from Caledon has been charged with fail to remain, and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and operation while impaired.
Police say the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days while the vehicle impounded for a week.
The accused is scheduled to make a court appearance in Orangeville on Aug. 8.
Impaired driving offences in Ontario can lead to immediate licence suspensions, fines, vehicle impoundment, and enrollment in education or treatment programs. Police agencies across Ontario are now conducting mandatory breathalyzer alcohol screening at every traffic stop on GTA highways, including the QEW and Highways 403 and 401.
The province is also looking to increase penalties for impaired driving, including increasing first-offence roadside licence suspensions from three days to and seven days, and move second-time suspensions from seven days to 14 days.
Police say anyone who suspects a driver of operating while impaired by drugs or alcohol is encouraged to call 911 and report it when safe to do so. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
