You may want to plan your route ahead of time if you’re travelling around the city this weekend as there will be rolling road closures for the annual Sikh Martyrdom Parade in Brampton.
The closures will happen on Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m. and will continue through to around 6 p.m.
The parade route will start at Dixie Road and Bovaird Drive East and continue through Brampton to the Humberwest Parkway and Queen Street. More details on the exact closures and what time specific roads will be blocked off is expected later in the week.
The Sikh Martyrdom Parade, also called Nagar Kirtan, is a religious tradition that has been regularly practiced by Brampton’s Sikh community. The word “Nagar” means “town or neighbourhood,” while “Kirtan” is a term describing the singing of hymns.
Last year’s parade sparked controversy due to a parade float recreating the assassination of Indira Gandhi that was called out by India for the “glorification of violence.”
