It’s time to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in the new year with an awe-inspiring fireworks display and a performance by Canadian rockers Simple Plan.
The New Year’s Eve festivities start on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Brampton’s Garden Square with all residents invited to take part in the free event featuring music, performances, fireworks and more.
Local musical acts will open the evening at 8 p.m. starting with a set from DJ MusicBlender, followed by acclaimed Brampton rapper Spitty.
Brampton-based pop-rock performer CMAGIC5 takes the stage at 10 p.m. to warm up the crowd for Juno-winning pop-punk rockers Simple Plan headline the night.
Formed in Montreal in the late ’90s, Simple Plan had breakout hits on their 2002 album No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls including “I’d Do Anything,” “I’m Just a Kid,” “Addicted” and “Perfect.”
“They’ve sold 10 million albums worldwide, won multiple Juno Awards, performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics – and, most recently, launched the omnipresent #ImJustAKid TikTok challenge that’s spawned more than 4 million videos, including clips from Hilary Duff, Ed Sheeran, Usher and Venus and Serena Williams,” the city says of the band.
Following the stage show, the city will start its New Year’s Eve countdown at 11:55 p.m. When the clock strikes midnight the city will unleash a dazzling fireworks display sponsored by Tim Hortons.
Residents are being reminded to celebrate safely this year. Personal fireworks are prohibited in Brampton and can come with fines as high as $100,000.
“With a fantastic lineup of performers, including Simple Plan and a spectacular fireworks display, this year’s celebration promises to be unforgettable. We can’t wait to ring in 2025 with you,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement.
Some road closures will be in place, but the city will let customers ride for free on Brampton Transit on Dec. 31 after 7 p.m. with extended service. Free parking is also available at several downtown garages.
Parts of Main Street, Queen Street and Theatre Lane will be closed from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Dec. 31.
