A restaurant in Mississauga is the first in the city to get a Bib Gourmand mention in the Michelin Guide.

This week the guide announced they had expanded the bounds to cover “Toronto and Region” two years after its first foray into the city in 2022.

The expanded region stretched as far as Collingwood, Hamilton, Cambridge and Niagara Falls.

On Thursday evening, the guide announced the latest mentions. Toronto and region now have 15 restaurants with one Michelin star, and one restaurant with two stars: Sushi Masaki Saito in Toronto.

Four restaurants were awarded single stars — DaNico on College Street in Toronto; Hexagon in Oakville; Restaurant Pearl Morissette in Jordan Station; and The Pine in Creemore.

Guru Lukshmi in Mississauga is one of four restaurants to be awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, which is given to restaurants “that offer good quality food for a good value.”

The South Indian Mississauga restaurant is in a shopping centre at 7070 St. Barbara Blvd. at Derry Road and McLaughlin Road.

A vegetarian restaurant, they serve a variety of popular dishes like idli, dosa and sambhar.

Michelin says the restaurant is the “undisputed champion of dosas, offered in dazzling variety like nowhere else in the region.”

“It’s a good thing this South Indian restaurant takes up multiple bays in a sprawling Mississauga shopping center,” the guide says. “If the dining room were any smaller, the wait to get in would be endless.”

Michelin mentions the signature Mysore Bhaji Dosa, which is packed with “fantastic aloo masala is a good place to start for first timers, who will question whether they can finish the whole thing before doing just that.”

The guide says the idlys, vadas, and uttapam are made fresh, served hot, and come with warm sambar and refreshing chutneys.

“All of this food comes and goes in a rapid blur, and return visits are planned before you’re out the door,” the guide says.

Another Mississauga restaurant received a Michelin recommendation, which could be considered an “honourable mention” that recognizes excellent cuisine. Tamarind Modern Indian Bistro was one of several restaurants to receive a nod from the tastemakers, with the guide praising the diverse menu, lively weekend events and “curious creations like Chettinad chicken tacos and panipuri shots.”
