Brampton ACORN housing rally protest

Residents of a Brampton highrise say they will gather today to protest the living conditions at the building.

Tenants plan to gather outside of 99 Kennedy Rd. N. to demand an end to “‘roach infestations, mold and chronically neglected repairs.”

The landlord for the property, Golden Equity, could not be reached for comment.

Backed by ACORN, an anti-poverty advocacy organization that represents lower- and middle-income residents across Canada, the residents will also be calling on the City of Brampton  to broaden a landlord licensing program to include large apartment buildings.

“The City of Brampton is piloting a landlord licensing program but only for small buildings, meaning large corporate landlords like Golden Equity, who own highrises, are left completely unaccountable,” ACORN said.

According to ACORN, the issue in Brampton is closely connected to the purpose of National Housing Day and the urgent need for social and non-market housing in Canada. Similar rallies are being held across the country today.

A spokesperson for the residents say they intend to bring attention to the living conditions at the Brampton building and hope that the landlords listen and act on their demands for repairs and safety.
