For kids and adults who love the fast-paced sport of roller hockey, now’s your chance to get in on the action.
The upcoming 2023 season is starting soon for both the Mississauga Rattlers, which will begin on the week of April 24th, and for the Oakville Coyotes, beginning the week of April 17th.
Registrations are now open for kids and adults who are interested in joining the Mississauga league, as well as kids and adults who want to participate in the Oakville league. Both leagues are open to players of all skill levels.
This year is also the inaugural season for the new roller hockey league in the Kitchener/Waterloo area, with registrations now open. While roller hockey has been played in the Waterloo Region for two decades, the Kitchener Waterloo Kraken is the first and only league in the area and promises to offer an exciting and competitive experience for players and fans alike.
Recently, roller hockey has blown up in popularity as a more fast-paced version of the classic Canadian sport, being described as “the fastest game on wheels.”
Players in the roller hockey leagues typically play on ice hockey rinks that have been converted to roller rinks and on courts that are specifically designed for roller hockey.
Just like in ice hockey, players need to move quickly and be agile on their skates, which can make each game feel a lot more exciting.
Since the game is played in a 4v4 format, roller hockey teams are smaller. That means each player spends more time on the rink and gets more opportunities to manage their time and space with the puck, allowing them to be more creative with their offence.
There are many other benefits to playing roller hockey: Improved conditioning, developing longer strides, improved individual skills, and developing a quicker and more accurate shot, making the sport a great supplement to ice hockey and allowing ice hockey players to get practice even when they’re off the ice.
Look no further than all the professional athletes who played roller hockey in their youth: NHL stars Austin Mathews, Kyle Connor, Alex Debrincat, Dylan Larkin, Jamie Benn, three-time Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Maroon, and even this year’s projected number 1 pick in the upcoming NHL entry draft, Connor Bedard.
The Mississauga Roller Hockey League has been serving the community for over 25 years, offering hockey leagues for kids as young as six and adults as old as 60.
The league runs from April to June every year and offers a variety of both local and international tournaments and events throughout the season. The league has also been known to offer a roller hockey academy and summer camp, among other programs.
Similarly, the Halton Roller Hockey League is an Oakville-based youth organization that has also been around for more than 25 years, providing players of all ages and skill levels with a safe and fun environment to develop their skills and love for the game.
No matter which of the two leagues you’re interested in, both are expecting another great season this year – and they’re also a good opportunity for kids to get active, meet new people, and try a fun activity that engages them. Whether you’re new to the game or a seasoned pro, all skill levels are welcome to participate!
If you’re interested, be sure to register soon as the start of the 2023 season for both leagues is just a few weeks away. Registrations are open now for kids and adults at the Mississauga league, kids and adults at the Oakville league, and kids at the Kitchener Waterloo League.
