Mississauga has seen two huge rainfalls this summer and it is a season for the record books.
The summer is not quite over but Environment and Climate Change Canada says it is a record-breaking season.
As of Aug. 29, 498.2 mm of rain fell at Pearson Airport this summer, Environment Canada says.
“Will YYZ hit 500 mm before Sept 1st? Stay tuned,” Environment Canada posted on social media.
The weather forecaster has records of the total seasonal precipitation at the airport dating back to 1938.
The next highest amount of precipitation in a single season was the summer of 2008 when 396.2 mm fell at the airport.
The spring of 1942 is third with 369.4 mm.
The heavy rainfall led to dangerous flooding in Mississauga.
On July 16, 106 mm of rain fell in the span of a few hours, which led to rescues, and flooded roads and homes.
On the weekend of Aug. 17 and 18, as much as 170 mm of rain fell in some areas of Mississauga. The deluge flooded roads and damaged properties. Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services conducted 27 water rescues.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the rainfall events tested the city’s systems, and Mississauga is assessing how to further improve and adapt infrastructure.
