RECALLS: Helmets, plates, steam cleaner, oatmeal, and meatballs recalled in Ontario

Another week and another set of recalls.

Ontario residents are advised to inspect their homes for these food products and commonly used household items. Some may cause head injuries and burn hazards, while others could contain harmful bacteria that can make adults and children severely ill.


Multi-Purpose Kids’ Bike Helmets

The recall affects small kids’ bike helmets designed for head circumferences of approximately 18.5 to 20.5 inches. These helmets feature a black plastic adjustment knob at the back. The model number KY-E008 is printed on a white label inside the helmet.

The issue with the helmets is that they can fail to protect the child’s head in the event of a crash.

The company reported that 19 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between  June 2023 and February 2024.

Risks: Poses risks of head injury.

What you should do: Stop using the helmet and safely dispose of it in such a way that it cannot be used again. Then contact Chau River Sports Outdoors for a refund.

As of July 2, 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


Indigenous Collection Ceramic Plates by Canadian Art Prints

Tranquility & Teachings

The following plates are part of the recall:

  • Dancing Bears and Three Bears: PLT010 — 772665860106
  • Not Forgotten and Ancient Messages: PLT008 — 772665860083
  • Tranquility and Teachings: PLT015 — 772665860151

Third-party testing has revealed that the glazed ceramic plates contain lead levels exceeding allowable limits.

According to Health Canada, lead is highly toxic, particularly to children, and exposure can result in serious health effects, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, and impacts on the heart and immune system.

In extreme cases, exposure has led to fatalities.

The company reported that 4,502 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and 460 were sold in the United States between February 2020 to February 2024.

Risks: Poses health hazards.

What you should do: Consumers should stop using the glazed ceramic plates, contact Canadian Art Prints and Winn Devon Art Group Inc. for a refund, and then destroy the product.

As of July 16, 2024 the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada and the United States.


BISSELL® brand Steam Shot™ Handheld Steam Cleaner

The recall involves BISSELL® Steam Shot™ Handheld Steam Cleaners, Model Series 39N7 and 2994. “STEAM SHOT” is printed on the side, and model numbers are on the rating label at the bottom. The units come in green, grey, white, and blue.

This issue with the product is steam or hot water may escape while heating or during use.

The company reported that 354,596 units of the affected products were sold in Canada, and 3,199,407 units were sold in the United States between August 2008 to May 2024.

Risks: Potential burn hazard.

What you should do: Discontinue using the product and contact BISSELL to receive either an $82 credit to be used towards a Canada.BISSELL.com purchase or a $55 refund.

As of June 4, 2024, the company has received 14 reports of incidents in Canada and 12 reports of injuries. In the United States, the company has received 169 reports of incidents and 145 reports of injuries.


Baby Gourmet Organic brand Banana raisin oatmeal

The following batches are part of the recall:

The product comes in 227 g containers with the UPC 6 28619 10003 6. The best-before date is April 3, 2025.

The oatmeal is being recalled due to the possible microbial contamination of Cronobacter.

Food contaminated with Cronobacter may appear normal but can still cause illness. Although Cronobacter infections are rare, they can be serious or fatal, particularly in newborns. The bacteria can cause bloodstream and central nervous system infections, severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis), and blood poisoning (sepsis).

Risks: Potential health hazard.

What you should do: If individuals believe their child has become ill from eating the products, are asked to call their healthcare provider. It is recommended to throw the oatmeal out or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.


WeCook brand Swiss cheese meatballs, creamy mustard sauce

The following product is being recalled:

  • UPC: 6 28123 55000 6 — Best Before: July 20, 2024

The meatballs and sauce is being recalled from the marketplace as it may contain a microbial contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. 

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may appear normal but can still cause illness. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness.

Pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk, which brings on mild, flu-like symptoms. However, the infection can result in premature delivery, newborn infection, or stillbirth. In severe cases, Listeria infection can be fatal.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Risks:  Poses health hazards.

What you should do: Throw the product in the garbage and contact a healthcare provider if you believe you’ve fallen sick from eating the meatballs and sauce.
