RECALLS: Children’s toys, cribs, baby food and hair styling products recalled in Ontario

This week, Ontario residents are advised to inspect their homes for hairstyling products and several children’s items, as some pose health risks while others may contain harmful bacteria

This recall involves toy race cars with the package labelled “Racing – The Feeling of Flying.” The set includes three cars in red, yellow, and white, or red, white, and blue. The UPC is 058445278409, and the item number is 27840.

Health Canada’s sampling and assessment program found that this product exceeds the allowable lead concentration under the Consumer Products Safety Act.

Jeune French Contemporary Upholstered Panel Crib

The cribs are available in brushed grey oak, brushed light oak, or brushed white oak. They measure 30 inches wide by 55.5 inches long by 42 inches high and feature three adjustable mattress heights. A separate conversion kit allows the crib to be converted into a toddler bed.

A small cylindrical metal insert in the pre-drilled holes of the product’s wood frame may come loose.

The company reported that 10 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and 387 units were sold in the United States between January 2021 to March 2024.

Risks: Poses choking hazard to children.

What you should do: Discontinue using the recalled product and contact RH for a replacement crib or a refund.

As of July 1, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.  In the United States, the company has received two reports of incidents and no reports of injuries.

Gerber brand Oat Banana & Mango Baby Cereal

The affected product is Oat Banana and Mango Baby Cereal packaged in 227-gram boxes. Its UPC code is 0 65000 13361 5, and its “Best Before” date is May 30, 2025. The recall impacts batches with the code 3334007809.

The baby cereal is being recalled due to possible contamination with Cronobacter spp., a type of microbial contamination.

A few weeks ago a brand of oatmeal called Baby Gourmet Organic Banana raisin was recalled for potentially containing the same bacteria.

Food contaminated with Cronobacter may appear normal but can still cause illness. Although Cronobacter infections are rare, they can be serious or fatal, particularly in newborns. The bacteria can cause bloodstream and central nervous system infections, severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis), and blood poisoning (sepsis).

Risks: Potential health hazard.

What you should do: If individuals believe their child has become ill from eating the products, are asked to call their healthcare provider. It is recommended to throw the oatmeal out or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The recalled products do not have the mandatory hazard symbols on their labels, as required by the Cosmetic Regulations under the Food and Drugs Act. Improper labelling could lead to misuse and pose serious injury risks.

The company reported that 2,077 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between June 2018 to April 2023.

Risks: Potential health hazard.

What you should do: Do not use the recalled products and contact Naturadif Inc. to obtain a label with the warnings.

As of July 23, 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
