RECALL: Pistachios distributed in Ontario could have Salmonella contamination

Pistachios that were distributed in Ontario have been recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Officials said Nut Works raw whole pistachios are being pulled from shelves due to possible Salmonella contamination.

“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the CFIA said.

“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.”

Long-term affects could include severe arthritis.

There have been no reported illnesses involving the recalled product, however.

Consumers should check if they have purchased the pistachios and if so, throw them out or return them.

If someone becomes sick from eating the nuts, they were advised to contact their health-care provider.

The recall was triggered by CFIA test results.
