Kids shorts that were sold at Giant Tiger have been recalled, with Health Canada officials saying they pose a risk of lead exposure.

The government said the affected product is the Real Love Girls 2-piece short set, sizes 2 to 4T with style number S37313/Giant Tiger and SKU number 1444637.

The style number can be found on the fabric tag.

“The buttons on the shorts contain lead in excess of allowable limits, posing a risk of lead exposure to children,” the recall notice says.

It warns that lead is toxic if ingested, especially to children, and can pose a variety of health effects.

“Since lead builds up in the body, ongoing exposure to even very small amounts of lead can result in large amounts of lead being present in the body,” the notice says.

No incidents or injuries have been reported in Canada as of Oct. 14, however.

Giant Tiger sold 744 of the products in Canada from May to October of this year.

Consumers who purchased the product were advised to immediately stop using it and return it to Giant Tiger for a refund.
