RECALL: Fire risk from magnetic phone charger leads to Canada-wide recall
Published July 26, 2024 at 12:31 pm
Specific models of magnetic phone chargers sold online in Canada have been recalled following reports of more than a dozen units catching fire.
The recall is for Baseus Magnetic Wireless Charging Power Banks with model numbers PPCXM06 and PPCXW06, Health Canada says.
The charges were sold on the online retail website Aliexpress and come in multiple colours including white, black, light blue and light pink.
Health Canada says the lithium-ion battery in the power banks could overheat, posing a fire hazard. At least 14 of the charging units have caught fire in other countries, and while no fires have been reported in Canada there have been incidents “of potential bulging or swelling from consumers” around the world.
Both models of the recalled chargers have a magnetic side that attaches to mobile phones. The model number is displayed on the magnetic side of the device, and “20W” is displayed on the non-magnetic side.
Anyone who bought the charges should immediately stop using the product and contact Baseus for a full refund, Health Canada says.
The affected products were sold from May 2022 to October 2023 with more than 100 sold in Canada.
