Published June 14, 2023 at 4:49 pm

Niagara police are investigating damage done to a rainbow crosswalk in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Police say that officers were called to respond to a report of mischief/vandalism near an administrative building in the town on June 1. Police say that sometime between the morning of May 30 and about 5:45 pm on June 1, a suspect damaged the crosswalk, designed to support the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, at the Niagara Stone Road and Anderson Lane intersection.

Police say they received a video of a male riding an ATV intentionally doing “burnouts” on the rainbow crosswalk.

The suspect is described as a white male with a slim build who was seen wearing a black full-face helmet, red or pink shorts, black shin-high socks and write Crocs. He was shirtless at the time of the incident.

The ATV is described as dark-coloured (possibly green), with a right rear taillight that might not be working.

Police say the incident could be hate-motivated.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact detectives by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009408 (reference incident 23-60056).
