Where:
Lion City Restaurant, located in the Golden Square Centre on Central Parkway West off of Burnhamthorpe Rd. It has been a Mississauga staple for over 18 years and is known for serving authentic Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai cuisine. There are about 40+ seats in the resto that boasts Chef Lilian Ow’s tasty and lengthy menu that includes meat and curry dishes, seafood, rice and noodle dishes and desserts.

The Verdict:

I tried the Mee Goreng and sticky rice durian & coconut milk. The Mee Goreng is comprised of an extremely tasty combination of yellow noodles, chicken, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, peas, potato, cabbage, onions and tomato. The simple looking dish packs a powerful punch of umami sensation. I found it extremely addicting and could have polished it off in one sitting, but I had to save room for dessert.

Most people either love or hate the taste of what is known as the “king of fruits” in Southeast Asia – durian. Durian is a rather intimidating fruit covered with thick thorns that possesses an odour reminiscent of either sweet honey or raw sewage. It depends on which side of the fence you are on. I personally experience both a delectable and revolting sensation with durian, which to me is fascinating and slightly addictive.

The sticky rice durian & coconut milk dessert is a pleasantly fragrant and colourful array of various elements, a stark contrast to the final bite that hits you. The sweet fragrance of the fruit and creamy and thick coconut milk were the first sensations to hit my palate. Just before I swallowed it, the sting of an onion-like taste hit the back of my tongue. I kept this song and dance going in search of more of the fragrant taste and less of the oniony bite until I polished the entire dish off.

While the service can take some time depending on what you order and what time of day it is, I think it’s worth the wait for some very tasty and uncommon dishes, making this one of the most unique restos in Mississauga. You will also likely get a chance to meet Chef Lilian if you go on a busy night, as she typically does her rounds greeting regulars.
