Following widespread community backlash, the province will be going back on one of the new restrictions it announced on Friday.

Premier Doug Ford confirmed this afternoon that regulations will be amended to allow playgrounds and outdoor play areas to stay open, although large gatherings still won’t be permitted.

“Ontario’s enhanced restrictions were always intended to stop large gatherings where spread can happen,” Ford said.

“Play outside safely. Parents, keep your distance and wear masks if you can’t.”

The move comes after community members and health experts noted that COVID-19 transmission is much less common in outdoor areas, criticizing the decision to close access to outdoor amenities.

At this time, the rest of the province’s new restrictions remain in effect.
