Protest prompts police to beef up presence at Hindu temple in Brampton

There is an ongoing protest at a Hindu temple in northeast Brampton this afternoon, prompting heavy police presence.
In a statement released Sunday, police emphasized their commitment to public order and safety, noting that while they respect the right to protest under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, their primary responsibility is ensuring the well-being of the community.
Shortly after, Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah shared the post, adding, “Those who engage in such activities will be pursued, arrested and charged.”
Police have not specified the reason for the protest, though a video circulating on social media suggests potential tensions between members of the Sikh and Hindu communities.
The footage shows groups gathered outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir, with signs of unrest including yelling and chanting.
It’s unclear whether the protest was a planned demonstration or arose spontaneously.
Peel police continue to monitor the situation, reiterating that “any acts of violence, threats or vandalism will be investigated.”
Individuals are encouraged to report any crimes in progress by calling 911.
#WATCH: I have never seen Sikhs & Hindus fight in Canada. But it’s happening now in Brampton.
Why? I say failed assimilation. Bring to many people at once, this is the result. Thanks PM Trudeau.
