Premiers to meet in Ontario to discuss U.S. leadership change

Ontario is set to host Canada’s Premiers next week in the City of Toronto.

According to Ontario Premier Ford, those in attendance will discuss vital issues, such as Canadian energy security, health care and Canada-U.S. relations, especially with President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration around the corner.

“With a new administration taking office in the United States, it’s never been more important for Canada’s premiers to work together to protect Canadian jobs and build up stronger partnerships on both sides of the border,” said Premier Doug Ford, Chair of the Council of the Federation in an official statement.

The Council of the Federation — the gathering body — includes all 13 provincial and territorial Premiers.

According to a release by the Council of the Federation Secretariat, the federation is purpose-built to give Premiers the chance to work collaboratively and demonstrate collective leadership.

After the meeting has concluded, representatives of the federation will host a closing news conference, scheduled for 2:00 pm on Dec. 16.
