Potential funnel cloud development in Ontario

Storm watchers say conditions could be right for funnel clouds and possibly a landspout tornado as much of Ontario is under weather advisories or warnings.

InstantWeather Canada said on Friday that it is tracking thunderstorms in southwestern Ontario that have “potential for the development of brief funnel clouds.”

The Kitchener-Waterloo area is under a special weather statement with thunderstorms expected to bring between 30mm and 60mm of rain on Friday, while a rainfall warning has been issued for the neighbouring Ayton area.

InstantWeather says it’s watching storms near Owen Sound and Chesley and conditions could result in a rare landspout tornado.

“Landspout tornadoes are typically weaker than supercell based tornadoes, but they could still be dangerous as they can cause flying debris and damaging wind gusts,” InstantWeather says.

The rainfall warning for Ayton says to be wary of slow-moving thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall between 40mm to 60mm expected.
