Fans of a new Netflix series have spotted streets and places filmed in Mississauga, Hamilton and Halton Hills.
Painkiller, a drama series focusing on the origins of the opioid crises, dropped on Netflix on Aug. 10. The series stars Matthew Broderick, West Duchovny, Taylor Kitsch, and Uzo Aduba.
The six-episode series tells a fictionalized version of the origins and fallout of the opioid crisis. It is based on true events on the rise of the drug OxyContin and focuses on Purdue Pharma’s owner Richard Sackler (Broderick) and the fight to bring the family to justice. The Sackler family has been described as the “most evil family in America” for their role in the opioid crisis.
Painkiller was in the top ten most popular series soon after it was released.
The series opens with a wide shot of Richard Sackler’s mansion, which is the luxury home at 2275 Doulton Dr. in Mississauga. The home has been featured several times on insauga.com.
Last year, it was the second-most expensive house on the market anywhere in Canada, listed at $37.5 million. The home was still on the market as of Aug. 18, listed for $29,900,000.
Broderick is shown walking through the interior of the mansion and in one episode dancing in the entry way.
Broderick attempts to turn off a fire alarm in this room, in the Doulton Drive mansion.
The exterior of Scooter’s Roller Palace at 2105 Royal Windsor Dr. in Clarkson, is clearly featured in episode five.
And the building at 619 Lakeshore Rd. E., at Caven Street, is Dr. Tim Cooper’s Urgent Care Clinic in episode three. In this episode a teen fakes an injury to get OxyContin.
Hamilton residents spotted filming for the series in August of 2021. There were crews at the Lopresti Pharmacy on Concession Street and East 31st Street, which was transformed into Value Pharmacy.
Georgetown in Halton Hills is also featured in the series. All the garage scenes featuring Taylor Kitsch’s character, Glen Kryger, a mechanic who becomes addicted to OxyContin, were filmed in Georgetown, according to IMDb.
There were also shooting locations in Toronto and New York State. The series was filmed between Aug. 9, 2021 and Nov. 5, 2021, according to IMDb.
Editors note: This story was updated on Aug. 21 to clarify that this series is a fictionalized version of the origins and fallout of the opioid crisis.
