Residents should be aware of a new scam circulating in Mississauga, Brampton and other Ontario cities.

Peel police say they were contacted by a local resident who received a suspicious Service Ontario text message. The text offers the recipient a $120 refund following the province’s recent decision to eliminate licence plate stickers.

The text urges the recipient to follow a link and claim their money:

The message is a scam — Service Ontario doesn’t send refunds via text message.

Residents who want to check if they qualify for a licence plate sticker refund are advised to visit Service Ontario’s website. If eligible, the refund will be mailed.

The province announced earlier this month that, effective March 13, Ontario will scrap the fee as well as the requirement for drivers to have a licence plate sticker.

The government has said eliminating the licence plate stickers could save the province as much as $29 million in postage alone over the next five years.

Residents are also eligible to get a refund if they paid their sticker on or after March 2020 and are in good standing with no tickets, or if all tickets have been paid.
