The province’s police watchdog has cleared officers after a man was injured during an arrest in Brampton.
The incident began with a York Regional Police investigation into a stolen SUV on April 10, the Special Investigations Unit said in a press release on July 29.
The Special Investigations Unit is the civilian police oversight agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that have resulted in a death or serious injury, or if a firearm was discharged at a person.
Using a police helicopter, officers tracked the the SUV to 30 Intermodal Dr., Brampton, the SIU said.
Unmarked police vehicles surrounded the SUV and the driver, a 31-year-old man, was “extricated from the SUV, grounded and taken into custody,” the press release states.
During the arrest, officers struck the man, the SIU said.
He was taken to hospital. The SIU said the man was not diagnosed with any serious injuries.
As the man did not sustain a serious injury within the terms of the SIU mandate, this left the SIU without jurisdiction to investigate.
