Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah is throwing his support behind plans to make places of worship off-limits to protestors.
The chief said recent demonstrations outside of temples in both Mississauga and Brampton warrant the moves to keep people safe.
Proposals to establish community safety zones around places of worship have been suggested by Mississauga Ward 3 Councillor Dipika Damerla and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown following the physical confrontations that have taken place or have been threatened at both Sikh and Hindu temples.
“Recent demonstrations across Peel Region, near or at places of worship, have raised significant public safety concerns, with some devolving into violence and criminal activity,” Duraiappah said in a letter addressed to Mississauga city council. “While we respect the right to peaceful assembly and expression, it is also important to balance this with the safety and freedom of community members to access and practice their religion at places of worship without fear.”
The chief goes on to say that intimidation, incitement, hatred, or violence in any form will not be tolerated in Peel Region, especially in or around vulnerable social infrastructure.
A violent clash took place at Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton recently during a demonstration by those carrying flags and banners in support of the successionist movement for an independent Sikh state of Khalistan, an area that is part of India.
The next day, a large group of those associated with the Hindu temple attempted to march towards a Sikh temple in Mississauga but were thwarted by police, which led to skirmishes. Demonstrations have also been held at Westwood Mall in the Malton area of Mississauga.
So far, four people have been arrested, but Peel Police say they are still reviewing video footage and that more charges could be filed.
The strife has caused divisions along ethnic and religious lines as some Sikh groups support the creation of Khalistan while Hindus back the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is opposed to the separation.
Duraiappah said in light of the threat of violence, Peel Police have already taken steps to increase their presence around places of worship to provide reassurance and prevent potential acts of violence.
Both Mississauga and Brampton would have to pass bylaws to put restrictions into effect.
