Most of the stories we hear in about in Brampton and Peel Region when it comes to crime is overwhelmingly negative; more often than not we hear about crime happening in the city.

But sometimes there is some benefit to hearing about what’s good in the community, and getting rewarded for it.

The Peel Regional Police have announced the 2018 launch of the Positive Ticketing Program. The event took place this past week at the Circle K convenience store at 10601 Chinguacousy Road in Brampton.

Operation Heat was developed by Mac’s (now Circle K) in 2007 as part of their crime prevention through community engagement strategy and providing police officers the opportunity to engage in the positive ticketing of young people who are observed doing random acts of kindness or exhibiting positive behaviour in the community. Peel Regional Police has participated in the positive ticketing program since 2013.

Positive ticketing encourages positive interactions between youth and officers. Some police officers may use the coupons to recognize youth for wearing bicycle helmets, doing good deeds and following school crossing rules.

Other officers may use them as icebreakers to start conversation with youth in their patrol areas. The coupons are for a free beverage at all participating Circle K Convenience stores across Ontario. In Peel Region, officers have issued over 65,000 positive tickets.
