Plans for next steps to redevelop Dixie Mall for residential towers moving forward

The plan to redevelop Dixie Outlet Mall is moving forward with another chance for residents to comment.
Dixie Outlet Mall, located just south of the QEW, is one of Mississauga’s oldest malls. It opened in 1956 as a plaza and converted to an indoor mall in the late 1980s.
Many shoppers may remember the Knob Hill Farms food terminal that opened in 1978 and closed in late 2000.
But, like many shopping malls, there are now plans for change again. Plan Dixie, a redevelopment proposal for the Dixie Mall site, first came forward in 2019.
The proposed plan includes the redevelopment of five blocks of land with towers of nine to 25 storeys tall with a mix of condo and rental apartments. The project could bring around 1,200 units. About 3.5 acres of park space and publicly accessible lands are also in the proposal.
The property owner, Slate Asset Management, has plans for a mixed-use community, and approximately 13.5 per cent or 78,700 square feet at the northwest end would be demolished for the project.
None of the big stores — Treasure Hunt, No Frills, Fantastic Flea Market and Winners — will be impacted by the development.
If plans proceed, the shops in the area slated for demolition could relocate to vacant spaces in the mall.
Now, City of Mississauga planners are getting ready to move forward with the next steps focusing on “key elements to achieve a complete community and set a policy framework to inform an official plan amendment,” according to the project website.
The city welcomes the public to a community meeting to discuss the plans and provide comment.
The in-person meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 29 at the Small Arms Inspection Building, 1352 Lakeshore Rd. E.
There are two sessions — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
