Planned high-rise would replace old-time Mississauga plaza

An apartment building proposed for the Port Credit area of Mississauga would see the elimination of a long-time plaza that has housed restaurants and supermarkets.
The planned building, on the north side of Lakeshore Rd. E. and Elmwood Ave. N., would be 17-storeys and contain 148 residential units and commercial space on the bottom floor.
Currently the plaza houses Elmwood Meat Market and Wingporium and was once home to Planet Organic which closed two years ago. It was built in the 1950s.
A community meeting held earlier this year had residents voicing opposition to the plan.
Concerns raised include the height of the building and the impact it will have on neighbouring homes, the increase in traffic caused by the increase in residents the building will bring and the lack of parking.
Concern were also raised that the building will create an “unacceptable precedent” that will have a domino effect on other sites and transform Lakeshore Rd. into a wall of high-rises “that will destroy the village charm” of Port Credit, according to City of Mississauga planning committee report.
The project is currently under consideration by Mississauga planning staff.
