A student pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in a farm field late Thursday afternoon in southwestern Ontario after the small plane he was flying developed engine trouble.
The 25-year-old pilot, the lone person on board the aircraft, had left London and was headed to Goderich when he encountered difficulty with the plane over the small community of Central Huron, just south of Goderich, Ontario Provincial Police said.
The pilot spotted a large farm field just north of Bayfield Road, near Tipperary Line, and landed the plane safely shortly after 5 p.m.
Huron County OPP and the Central Huron Fire Department quickly responded to a report of a possible plane crash. When they arrived at the scene, they found the aircraft had landed safely and that the pilot was not injured.
Police added the small plane was not damaged and that it was being inspected to determine if it could safely be flown back to London.
The pilot was intending to land in Goderich, on the shores of Lake Huron, when the plane began having engine trouble, police said.
