Brampton has followed through on showing support for LGBTQIA2S+ communities with a rainbow crosswalk for Pride Month.

The proposal to bring a Pride walk to Brampton for the month of June goes back to 2022 with City Council support, but the project languished as no direction was ever given to City staff.

Despite funding from Peel Region set aside in 2019 for annual Pride and Trans flag crosswalks in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon, the project sat in limbo until it was raised last year by Coun. Rowena Santos.

Located in Chinguacousy Park, the crosswalk will be in place as part of Brampton’s Pride Month celebrations and the city is encouraging residents to visit and take their pictures with the attraction.

“Love is love is love,” Santos said in a statement to Insauga.com.

“In Brampton, we celebrate love and take pride in being a city where love belongs. This crosswalk is a symbol of belonging that embraces all,” she said. “Thank you for being you.”

The Region of Peel has an annual fund of up to $25,000 for road decal Pride crosswalks for Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. Brampton is eligible for funding up to $8,333 from the Region to cover a portion of the estimated $32,000 cost of the crosswalks, depending on paint and material costs, according to a report last year.

The City shows support for Brampton’s LGBTQIA2S+ communities with annual Pride celebrations which took place earlier this month and the installation of rainbow benches in Garden Square, and Pride flag decals in Vivian Lane.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said the new crosswalk was Brampton’s first Pride walk. The city clarified to say it had a Pride crosswalk in 2023 following delays.
