Art and sport come together for new mural at basketball court in Brampton

The city’s latest public art project blends sport and art with a new mural at a community basketball court and a chance to meet the Brampton artists behind the creation.

The mural is called “Live Together, Play Together” and was designed by local artists Elicser Elliott and Ghazaleh Rastgar, along with help from Brampton’s first artist in residence, Sima Naseem.

Located at the Wiggins Park basketball court, the mural “is a celebration of the local community and the unifying power of basketball,” the city says.

“With two characters on either side of the court aligning with the parameters of standard courts, the artwork captures the spirit of friendly competition, teamwork and connection that bring people together,” the city says of the new installation.

The city is celebrating the unveiling of the mural with a meet-and-greet with the artists next week, giving residents a chance to meet with the creators and learn about the city’s growing public art program.

This mural is part of Brampton’s My Neighbourhood Art Project – a series of site-specific, temporary art installations created in collaboration with the local community.

Naseem was named Brampton’s first-ever artist in residence last year to help showcase and develop the city’s diverse arts scene. The Brampton Artist in Residency program offers local professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations an $8,000 artist fee and free, dedicated private workspace.

The “Live Together, Play Together” artist talk is being held in Wiggins Park on Sept. 25 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
