One person is fighting for their life in hospital after being shot during an armed robbery at a gas station north of the Greater Toronto Area late Monday night.
Ontario Provincial Police now on the hunt for the shooter say the incident unfolded at about 11:30 p.m. when the culprit, armed with a gun, walked into the rural gas station on County Road 109, just west of Orangeville.
Moments later, police said in a news release, the culprit fired the gun, critically wounding one person. The victim was rushed by air ambulance to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where they remain in “life-threatening condition.”
Police didn’t say if the victim works at the gas station or if they were a customer, nor did they release any other information about the person who was shot.
The culprit was wearing a three-quarter-length winter jacket with a fur hood, black pants, black shoes and a blue medical mask, police said.
Investigators, who didn’t say if the shooter is male or female, are appealing to the public for help in finding the culprit. Anyone spotting the person is urged to call 911 immediately.
Police have released surveillance photos that captured the image of the person responsible for the robbery and shooting.
As police investigate, they say area residents will continue to see an increased police presence in the area of County Road 109, between 7th Line and 17th Line.
Anyone who might have video footage of the area of the robbery between 11:15 p.m. on Monday and midnight is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
