peel cop charged assault brampton

What started as a call about a man in distress has led to multiple assault charges for a Peel Regional Police officer according to Ontario’s police watchdog agency.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says charges have been laid against a Peel police constable following an “interaction” with a man in Brampton on Feb. 8.

The SIU says police were responding to “reports of a man in distress” in the area of Rutherford Road North and Williams Parkway in Brampton when there was “an interaction between an officer and the man.”

Investigators did not elaborate on the incident but said that the man in distress was arrested and suffered “serious injuries,” which required transport to hospital.

The SIU has not said what type of injuries the man reportedly sustained during the incident, but on Thursday said Peel Regional Police Const. Trevor Lau has been charged with one count each of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Nov. 30

Insauga.com has reached out to Peel Regional Police with questions on whether the officer will remain on active duty or face disciplinary measures, but no response was immediately received.

The SIU is Ontario’s independent civilian government agency, investigating the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
