Heavy rains and flooding have led to an overflow of a wastewater facility in Mississauga.

Mississauga, Brampton and much of southern Ontario saw heavy rain with 97.8 mm falling Tuesday (July 17) at Pearson Airport, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Partially treated wastewater from the G. E. Booth wastewater treatment facility in Lakeview has been released into Lake Ontario, according to a press release from the Region of Peel.

The exact amount of water is unknown at this time. Partial bypasses are common during high rainfall events.

“The drinking water supply remains clean and safe for consumption,” the release states. “Our water treatment facilities are operating effectively, ensuring the highest standards of water quality.”

But people should avoid swimming or engaging in any water-related activities along the Lake Ontario beaches in Mississauga until further notice, the release states.

All three beaches in Mississauga — Jack Darling Memorial Park, Lakefront Promenade and Richard’s Memorial Park — are posted with warnings to avoid swimming.

People can check the beach water testing for the most recent results.

Peel Region will provide updates as more information becomes available.
