Six people have been hit with drug charges after Mounties found over 1,300 marijuana plants, 200 kgs of dried cannabis, 60 kgs of magic mushrooms and guns at several Ontario properties including one north of Brampton.

The RCMP says the investigation began when officers from the Kitchener detachment found some 1,365 marijuana plants at a property in Melancthon Township, approximately 70 kilometres north of Brampton.

The discovery led police to launch Project O COSMO, turning their investigative sights on three properties in Melancthon, Kitchener and Wilmot Township.

Between Aug. 2 and Aug. 11, Mounties say searches were conducted where officers found a plethora of other drugs including more than 60 kgs of psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms, 914 grams of methamphetamine, 6.25 kgs of hashish, 72 kgs of cannabis edibles and 4 grams of cocaine.

Police also recovered one 9mm Glock handgun with two loaded magazines, a .22 calibre rifle and two replica firearms.

Six adults were arrested and charged with various drug or firearms offences, ranging in age from 37 years old to 71.

The RCMP says Em Kha Khuong, 37, Thanh Hien Hong, 40, Tuong Nguyen, 39, Thi Ty Do, 71, Duc Duy Hoang, 45, and George Gobran, 53, all face multiple charges in relation to the investigation.

Police say Khuong, Hong and Nguyen are being held in custody while Do is due in court in Kitchener on October 6, and Hoang and Gobran are scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27.

Mounties thanked the OPP and Waterloo Regional Police Service for their assistance during Project O COSMO, helping “put a stop to the illegal activities occurring in numerous communities.”

“We are pleased to be able to keep our communities safe by seizing both drugs and guns from another organized crime group,” said RCMP Insp. Lucio De Simone. “These results speak to the continuous efforts and commitments the RCMP and our partners bring to public safety.”
