Over 100 new traffic cameras coming as new ticket processing centre opens in Brampton

The first 100 new speed cameras will be up and running by the end of the year with dozens more on the way now that the city has opened its new Automated Speed Enforcement Processing Centre in Brampton.

Brampton City Council has been working to bring some 185 Automated Speed Enforcement cameras to the city with plans to have 100 new units installed by July, but delays have seen only 20 installed this year with the full rollout pushed back to the end of 2024.

By the end of the year, there will be 100 new cameras installed in Brampton Community Safety Zones with an additional 85 cameras coming by the end of summer 2025.

A slower-than-expected rollout didn’t stop the city from christening its new ticketing centre on Tuesday, moving ticketing from Toronto to Brampton and, along with new staff, will help the city crackdown on speeding, increase road safety.

The new facility is expected to generate approximately $30 million in revenue per year with annual projected expenses of $13 million.

The city says areas of Brampton with an ASE camera see a decrease in vehicle speeds of 6.5 km/h, and Mayor Patrick Brown called the new ASE centre a “game changer” for Brampton.

The new Automated Speed Enforcement Processing Centre in Brampton had a ribbon cutting on Sept. 3, 2024.

“This investment not only enhances our ability to enforce speed limits but also demonstrates our commitment to protecting our residents. We are proud to lead Ontario in creating safer streets and this centre is a crucial step in our journey,” the mayor said in a statement.

The city said its ticket processing at the old facility was limited by space, staffing and increasing demand according to the city, leaving some ASE cameras running for as little as two hours each day.
