The city’s push to improve road safety could lead to more than 100 new automated speed cameras and license plate readers coming to Brampton streets.
Last year Brampton City Council asked city staff to develop a strategy to install 135 additional Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) units across Brampton, which would add to the city’s current stock of 50 ASE cameras.
A report approved by a committee of council last week shows Brampton is also looking to add license plate readers, 360-degree video cameras and a video management platform to Brampton’s toolbox of road safety technology.
Once given the green light by council, the plan could see Brampton’s stock of ASE cameras more than triple to 185.
The city says the ASE system captures images of vehicles exceeding posted speed limits in school zones and community safety zones. Some 50 Brampton intersections earmarked by Peel Regional Police have already been selected for the addition of license plate readers and other upgrades.
The move to buy more cameras comes as the city is working on developing a new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Camera Processing Centre, moving the city’s ticket processing from Toronto to Brampton.
The city says the new facility will let the city process more images, help deter speeding, increase road safety and create more revenue for the city.
Brampton’s current ticket processing is limited by space, staffing and increasing demand according to the city, leaving ASE cameras only running at a fraction of their capacity. Some cameras are running for as little as two hours each day.
The city says increasing the number of ASE cameras is aimed at keeping residents and communities safe for drivers, pedestrians, children at play and cyclists.
Here are the fines for speeding in a Community Safety Zone in Brampton:
- 1 to 19 km over the limit is $5.00 per kilometre plus costs
- 20 to 29 km over the limit is $7.50 per kilometre plus costs
- 30 to 49 km over the limit is $12.00 per kilometre plus costs
