Outdoor sportswear store to open in Square One, Mississauga

An outdoor sportswear store is opening soon in Square One, Mississauga.

Columbia Sportswear has a sign announcing the opening of a new store on the second floor of Square One Shopping Centre.

The store will open in the winter opposite Hudson’s Bay Company.

Columbia sells outdoor clothing such as fishing and hiking apparel, shoes, boots and jackets.

The store’s history dates back to 1938 when Paul Lamfrom opened the Columbia Hat Company in Portland, Oregon after escaping Nazi Germany, according to Columbia’s website. Lamfrom named the company after the Columbia River in Oregon.

His daughter, Gertrude Boyle, later transformed the business into a national sportswear company. She became president of the company in 1970 after her husband died.

There are now over 430 retail stores worldwide.

There will be jobs available in the new store. Currently, a store manager position is posted.
