Federal government pledges funding to build affordable housing in Mississauga, Brampton

Mississauga and Brampton residents in desperate need of affordable housing received a boost this morning with news that Ottawa is delivering $22.9 million to Peel for 58 new affordable homes.
The money, which comes from the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), will ensure those new affordable units are built within the next year, near Mississauga and Lakeshore Roads, and target people most in need.
Region of Peel Chair Nando Iannicca said the money is badly needed as the municipality struggles to provide affordable housing. And the pandemic has led to even more homelessness in Peel and across the country.
“How can you thrive in society unless you have a place to call home,” said Iannicca, adding this is an “extraordinary” day for residents of Mississauga and Peel who are struggling to pay the rent.
Iannicca was joined at a press conference announcing the funds by Mississauga Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko, Mississauga Centre MP and federal minister of transport Omar Alghabra and Ahmed Hussen, federal minister of families, children and social development.
Dasko said the funding is much needed, and he’s confident it’s a sign of more to come from the federal government.
“This will positively impact our residents,” said Dasko. “There are significant and tangible benefits for them.”
Hussen, also minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, said his government recognizes that every Canadian deserves a place to call home.
“This (money) will help the most vulnerable people in Peel and at the same time stimulate the local economy,” he said, adding there’s more money on the way for Peel. “Our economic recovery out of the pandemic must be inclusive of everyone.”
Alghabra said the new housing units will be made available to those struggling the most, those “…having to decide between paying the rent and putting food on the table.
“This is the kind of targeted investment we need,” he continued. “It’s for those most vulnerable…those in temporary shelters and facing homelessness.”
Alghabra said Ottawa knows more funding is badly needed in Peel, and promised “more is on the way.”
The latest funding announcement represents a second round of cash provided under the RHI. Peel earlier received $30.3 million for 67 housing units in Brampton.
In addition, also under the RHI, $2.3 million was recently provided for the Armagh Housing Expansion project in Mississauga.
