OPP warns of more distraction thefts across Ontario

Police are warning people to take extra care while running errands, as distraction thefts are on the rise.
Earlier this month, Durham Regional Police put out a warning concerning the rise of distraction thefts. However, despite early reports on how to avoid these kinds of incidents, East Region OPP officers have put out video footage showcasing just how little effort goes into pulling these kinds of heists off.
The OPP and other police services across eastern Ontario have been receiving reports of #distraction thefts in and around department or grocery stores, particularly targeting women. This is how easy it can happen.

The video shows a busy supermarket where two individuals engage a woman who is exiting the building.
“In these kinds of cases, the thieves engage the customer in conversation,” says the officer in the video. “They might ask about what items [the target] is buying or just chat. Meanwhile, another person is helping themselves to a wallet or purse.”
The officer then proceeds to discuss just how brash and common these kinds of thefts are and how individuals should be on high alert when operating in crowded areas.
“These kinds of thefts can happen anywhere, including your community,” says the officer.
Additional details provided by the OPP representative include areas where these kinds of crimes are the most likely to happen, including parking lots, where the perpetrators will distract the target with questions about their vehicle, or point to a non-existent problem with the vehicle itself.
“Always keep purses, backpacks or bags closed, secure and in sight,” police say.
