OPP representatives released a video today (Nov. 12) showing a severe two-vehicle collision caused by an individual throwing rocks.
The video shows dashcam footage of an intersection in the Markham area.
Halfway through the footage, a passenger in a vehicle heading down the eastbound lane appears to throw a rock at an oncoming westbound vehicle.
The driver — said to have lost consciousness as a result of impact according to police — then loses control and collides with an oncoming car at high speeds.
OPP stated in a written report that this incident left two individuals with life-threatening injuries. Since the incident, one victim has been discharged while the other remains in hospital.
Since Sept. 20 the Aurora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received 11 reports of rocks being intentionally thrown at vehicles along Highway 48 in Markham.
At the time of publication, York Regional Police (YRP) has received nine additional reports of rocks being deliberately thrown at vehicles in their jurisdiction.
“These innocent victims were simply travelling on our roadways, which should be safe for everyone. It’s shocking that such dangerous acts are occurring in our community. We’re determined to put a stop to it and to relentlessly pursue whoever is responsible. We want to ensure that no other family member or loved one has to endure such a traumatic experience,” said Detective Inspector Sean Chatland in an official statement.
Based on several OPP reports, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and its occupants are suspected to be involved.
According to law enforcement officials, Aurora OPP is further investigating these incidents alongside York police.
OPP officials are asking anyone who can identify the vehicle and its passengers to contact police immediately.
