Individuals planning to participate in protests on overpasses are warned by police of potential hazards from distracting signs and falling debris —impacting drivers, with the reminder that criminal charges could apply.

On Friday (Dec. 29) OPP posted a message via X (formerly Twitter) warning participants of demonstrations taking place along overpasses to be careful as material and debris that fall from above can be extremely dangerous to motorists.

Police didn’t specify which protests and demonstrations they’re referring to, but there have been numerous public protests the past couple of months across the GTA and beyond over the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“While the OPP respects the right of everyone to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, everyone has a right to a safe environment,” the statement said.

Authorities further noted, that individuals creating unsafe conditions for drivers may face charges under the Highway Traffic Act or the Criminal Code.

This morning (Dec. 30), the OPP issued a follow-up post, alerting participants in overpass demonstrations about the dangers associated with signs and their potential to be unsafe and distracting to drivers.

“All those involved in a demonstration have the responsibility to ensure the event remains lawful, peaceful and safe,” the message said.

Individuals who jeopardize the safety of others, drivers included may face charges.

“Public safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to make sure everyone gets home safely,” OPP stated.
