Friends and family are remembering a young woman from Ottawa shot and killed in Brampton as “full of life, laughter, happiness and pure joy.”
“On her worst days, she made sure everyone around her was always happy,” reads an online tribute to Khadija Charmant, a 22-year-old woman shot and killed in Brampton earlier this month.
Charmant, also known as Marsha, was sitting in a parked car with four other women and one male around 6 a.m. on Oct. 19 when police say another vehicle pulled alongside them and someone started shooting.
The group were parked outside a Brampton recording studio and Charmant had travelled to the GTA to watch her friend perform at a concert, according to the CBC.
The victim’s mother Catiuska said police believe the vehicle was mistakenly targeted and that her daughter died trying to protect her friends from the gunfire, she told the CBC.
Friend of the victim Angeliqua Marmontel said Charmant was “known for taking care of her family and would take off the shirt on her back to make sure that they were always straight.”
Marmontel said Charmant’s death has been hard on her mother and three siblings that she left behind and has started a GoFundMe fundraiser collecting donations for the family and funeral expenses, saying “anything is helpful right now.”
Family members have shared the GoFundMe page on social media and have raised $4,346 of a $4,000 goal. The CBC reported the victim’s father Mark Jackson also died of gun violence in a Montreal shooting in 2020.
No suspect or vehicle descriptions have been released by police and investigators have not commented on any possible motive.
